Paatal Lok Season 1 Story
The story begins when four people are arrested for an attempted assassination of television journalist Sanjeev Mehra. The suspects come from very different backgrounds: Hathoda Tyagi, a feared killer from Uttar Pradesh; Kabir M, a Muslim man with a complicated past; Vishal Tyagi, better known as Hathoda Tyagi; and Mary, a woman from the Northeast whose identity becomes an important part of the investigation.
The case is handed to Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary, a police officer who has spent much of his career dealing with routine assignments and struggling to gain recognition within the department. For Hathi Ram, the case initially looks like an opportunity to prove himself.
Working with his younger colleague Imran Ansari, Hathi Ram begins interrogating the suspects and tracing their histories. The investigation soon takes him outside Delhi, particularly to Chitrakoot and Punjab, where he starts uncovering the circumstances that shaped the four suspects.
At the same time, Sanjeev Mehra deals with his own professional and personal problems. His career, ambitions and relationships gradually become intertwined with the larger mystery.
As Hathi Ram digs deeper, the case stops looking like a simple assassination attempt. The investigation begins connecting crime, politics, caste, religion, sexual identity, poverty and the influence of powerful people. The further he goes, the clearer it becomes that every suspect has a story that is more complicated than the initial police record suggests.

Jaideep Ahlawat as Hathi Ram Chaudhary
Jaideep Ahlawat's performance is one of the biggest strengths of Paatal Lok. Hathi Ram is not portrayed as an idealised police hero. He is frustrated, insecure, stubborn and sometimes morally complicated, but he possesses a strong instinct for investigation.
Ahlawat gives the character considerable depth without turning him into a stereotypical tough police officer. Hathi Ram's relationship with his wife Renu, his son Siddharth and his junior colleague Ansari helps show the person behind the uniform.
His investigation also becomes personal in a different way. The deeper Hathi Ram travels into the backgrounds of the suspects, the more he begins to understand that the world he works in is divided by social and economic realities far beyond the police station.
Abhishek Banerjee as Hathoda Tyagi
Abhishek Banerjee's portrayal of Hathoda Tyagi is another standout element. Tyagi is introduced as a frightening criminal whose reputation is built around extreme violence, yet the series gradually reveals the circumstances that shaped him.
The character becomes one of the show's most intriguing examples of how a person's past can influence the choices they make later in life. Banerjee balances Tyagi's intimidating presence with quieter moments that reveal another side of the character.
Hathi Ram and Imran Ansari
The relationship between Hathi Ram and Imran Ansari gives the police investigation much of its human dimension. Ansari is younger, ambitious and more comfortable with modern investigative methods, while Hathi Ram relies heavily on experience and instinct.
Their partnership is not completely smooth. Hathi Ram's insecurities and Ansari's desire to advance within the department create tension between them. At the same time, the two officers gradually develop a professional understanding that becomes increasingly important as the case becomes more dangerous.
What Does Paatal Lok Mean?
The title Paatal Lok comes from the traditional idea of a hidden or underworld realm. The series uses the concept metaphorically to describe the darker layers of society that exist beneath the polished surface of everyday life.
The show presents different social worlds as interconnected but deeply unequal. The police investigation becomes a way of travelling through these different layers, from influential media figures and wealthy people to criminals, migrants and people living on the margins.
This idea is central to the series. The deeper Hathi Ram investigates, the further he moves away from the comfortable version of society that exists on the surface.
Direction and Screenplay
Prosit Roy and Avinash Arun give the season a grounded visual and narrative style. The investigation is allowed to develop gradually instead of relying on a new twist in every scene.
The screenplay by Sudip Sharma and the writing team spends considerable time exploring the backgrounds of the suspects. This structure makes the mystery more than a question of who attempted to kill Sanjeev Mehra. It asks why these particular people became involved and what forces shaped them.
The nine-episode structure gives the story enough space to move between Delhi and the locations connected to the suspects. Some episodes focus more heavily on investigation, while others explore individual characters and their pasts.
Themes and Social Commentary
Paatal Lok uses its crime story to examine several uncomfortable realities of contemporary Indian society. Caste, religion, class, political influence and discrimination are not treated as separate subjects; they overlap throughout the investigation.
The series also explores how labels can affect the way people are treated. The four suspects are initially presented through police records and criminal allegations, but their individual histories reveal that there is considerably more to each of them.
At the same time, the show does not excuse criminal behaviour simply because it provides a character's backstory. Instead, it attempts to explain how violence and desperation can develop within particular social environments.
Paatal Lok Season 1 Review
Paatal Lok Season 1 is most effective when it treats its murder investigation as a gateway into a much larger story. The central mystery is strong enough to keep the plot moving, but the character work gives the series its lasting impact.
Jaideep Ahlawat carries much of the show with a restrained performance that makes Hathi Ram feel like a real, flawed police officer rather than a conventional screen hero. Abhishek Banerjee is equally memorable as Tyagi, particularly because the series gradually complicates the audience's initial impression of him.
The supporting cast also contributes significantly. Neeraj Kabi's Sanjeev Mehra represents a very different kind of power from the criminals Hathi Ram investigates, while Ishwak Singh gives Ansari a convincing mixture of ambition and uncertainty.
The show's deliberate exploration of the four suspects is one of its greatest strengths, although viewers looking for a continuously fast-paced police thriller may find some of the character-focused sections slower than expected.
The Indian Express praised the series for its intelligent writing, fast pace and engaging storytelling, while giving it a 3.5 out of 5 rating. The show's combination of crime investigation and social commentary was a major part of its critical appeal.
Paatal Lok Season 1 Ending Explained
Spoiler warning.
The ending reveals that the attempted assassination of Sanjeev Mehra is connected to a much more complicated chain of relationships than the initial investigation suggests. Hathi Ram eventually pieces together the connections between the suspects, their pasts and the people who have been manipulating events from behind the scenes.
A major part of the conclusion concerns Hathoda Tyagi and his relationship with Masterji. Hathi Ram discovers more about the influence Masterji had on Tyagi and how that relationship shaped the killer's understanding of loyalty, violence and betrayal.
The investigation also exposes the role played by powerful people who are able to operate at a distance from the violence itself. The people at the bottom of the chain face the greatest physical consequences, while those with greater influence can attempt to distance themselves from the crimes.
Tyagi eventually confronts the truth about Masterji. His actions in the final episode are driven by that discovery and by the complicated emotional connection he has developed with the person he once trusted.
Hathi Ram, meanwhile, survives the final confrontation and manages to piece together the broader puzzle. His persistence eventually leads to his police badge being restored, although the experience has changed his understanding of both his profession and the society he works in.
The ending is therefore less about a simple victory for Hathi Ram and more about what he has learned. The case is solved, but the deeper social problems exposed during the investigation remain.

Is Paatal Lok Season 1 Worth Watching?
